Frequently Asked Questions

General Product Questions

What are the pricings for your heat flux sensors?

Our pricing varies depending on which sensor you are purchasing. The following pricing structure is followed.

  • XM: CHF 299
  • XP: CHF 479
  • XI: CHF 749
  • XO: CHF 729

Each sensor (except our XO) can be purchased as bare wires or with a connector. This connector is an additional 10 CHF.

Why measure heat flux if we already have thermocouples?
  •  Temperature is purely a measure of how hot something is.

  • Heat flux tells you where the heat is going and how strongly, which is exactly what is needed to compare cooling concepts and to validate models.

What payment methods do you accept?
  •  We can offer an invoice or direct payment online through our web shop.

What are the main differences between your gSKIN® heat flux sensors?

gSKIN® (XM, XP and XI) are similar heat flux sensors but differ in size, sensitivity and electrical resistance.

  • High sensitivity
  • Thin dimensions (0.5mm)
gSKIN®-XO is more commonly utilized within the building industry due to its thicker design, lower sensitivity and lower heat flux measurement range.
  • Lower sensitivity
  • Thickness of 3.3 mm

Are the heat flux sensors reusable?
  •  Yes, our heat flux sensors are designed for multiple uses. We do encourage customers to recalibrate their sensors every 2-3 years.

Are your heat flux sensors compatible with all dataloggers?
  •  Yes, our sensors are compatible with most dataloggers on the market.

  • We are happy to double check this information if you send your current data logger model to us.

How do I retrieve the data from my gSKIN® heat flux sensor?
  •  If you purchased a gSKIN®  DLOG datalogger, your data will be recorded through our greenteg software. Here, the data can be exported or saved for analysis.

  • If you did not purchase a data logger, you would not have received this software. You can proceed with your existing logger and software.

Measurement Method & Accuracy

Where can I place the heat flux sensors?
  • Typically, our heat flux sensors are placed between two materials or on the surface. This is standard for battery applications.

  • For specific inquiries, we are happy to consult with our R&D team for a more precise answer to your question.

What standards do your heat flux sensors meet?
  •  Our heat flux sensors are all compliant with ISO 8301 standards.

Do I need to calibrate the heat flux sensor?
  •  No, our heat flux sensors all arrive already calibrated, and you will receive a calibration certificate with your purchase.

  • We do recommend that customers re-calibrate their sensors after 2-3 years of usage.

Will the heat flux sensor disturb the measurement?
  • We use thin sensors and practical mounting methods. We are available to help guide placement, so you get useful data without disrupting your setup.

Sensor Mounting & Environment

What temperatures can your heat flux sensors withstand?
  • Our XM, XP and XI heat flux sensors operate within a range of -40 to +85 degrees Celsius for optimal results.
  • Our XO sensors operates at -15 to +85 degrees Celsius.

Where should I place the heat flux sensor on my surface?
  •  We recommend sandwiching the sensor between two solid surfaces.

  • You should place the sensors at the thermal path you want to quantify (e.g., on the cooling interface, casing, or a specific location you suspect is limiting performance).

How do you mount the heat flux sensors?
  • Select your surface of study, ensuring the area is dry, clean, and flat. We recommend cleaning the surface with Isopropanol.

  • Apply the sensor with your chosen mounting property. Ensure no air is trapped.

  • Mount the sensor with the positive side of the sensor facing the the direction of heat flux.

  • Sandwich the sensor between two contact areas.

What do you mount the gSKIN heat flux sensors with?

We have several products available for purchasing for mounting our gSKIN® sensors.

These are:

  • Adhesive tape: for a simple, quick set-up where thermal coupling is important.
  • Thermally conductive paste: used when pressure is applied to fix the HFS in the measurement setup.
  • Thermally conductive glue: for applications where additional mechanical stability is required.

How do you remove the gSKIN® heat flux sensors?
  • Apply Isopropanol or alcohol on the sensor and wait 60 seconds and then try to remove the sensor.

  • Do not try to tear at the contacts.

Special Case Applications

Do you have any water‑cooled heat flux sensors available?

No, our heat flux sensors are only designed for heat flux measurement purposes only.

How would you mount the heat flux sensor onto metal?

Use adhesive tape, glue or paste. Ensure that the surface is smooth.

These products are available for purchase in our web shop through the links in the previous paragraph.

How would you mount the heat flux sensor onto glass?
Use adhesive tape, which is available for purchase through our web shop.

How would you mount the heat flux sensor on wood?
Use thermally conductive glue or paste, which are both available for purchase in our web shop.
